"Together
In Fun And Fitness" was created for the George
A. Caravalho Santa Clarita Sports Complex and the design was
approved by the City of Santa Clarita. This mural measures
14 feet by 38 feet and depict images of sports and recreational
activities available at the Complex such as aquatic sports,
yoga, volleyball, adaptive basketball and skateboarding. Several
schools in the William H. Hart School District in the Santa
Clarita Valley will participate in this mural – starting
with Valencia High School and West Ranch High School.
The following images show our progress to the final approved
design for the Activities Center mural project.
This image was composed in Photoshop of images that depicts
some of the activities offered at the Sports Complex after
a meeting with Phil Lantis the Art & Events Administrator
and Dianna Boon, the Recreation Services Administrator of
the City of Santa Clarita
A couple of changes were made at the City's request in order
to capture a better depiction of the programs offered at the
Center. The composition was then translated into a line drawing
and was approved by the City in April 2008.
The approved line drawings were then sent to be printed onto
the vinyl wallpaper while the mural color style guide was
painted. This style guide was then translated into the paint
by number system.
Valencia
High School started off the painting sessions on May
6th - May 8th. Our goal was to have the entire Special Education
student body at Valencia participate in the painting. Over
the three days of painting, we had 136 students, approximately
87 students with special needs and 49 mainstream students
working together. We incorporated Valencia's "Circle
of Friends" and the "Yes I Can" groups that
focus on inclusion.
West
Ranch High School continued the painting sessions on
May 12th and May 14th. Approximately 37 students from the
Aspergers Program partnered with 26 mainstream students during
these two days utilizing the "Yes I Can" group.
Arroyo
Seco Junior High School finished the painting sessions
on May 29th and May 30th. Approximately 61 students with special
needs partnered with 43 mainstream students to complete the
painting sessions.
Sequoia Charter School students
traveled to the Activities Center to touch up and place
the finishing brushstrokes on the mural. They completed
the mural on July 18, 2008.
We wanted to thank everyone
who attended the unveiling of the "Together In Fun And Fitness
mural at the Activities Center in the George A. Caravalho Santa
Clarita Sports Complex on November 7, 2008.
Special Thanks to Mr. Marty Lieberman and Kathy
Hunter of the William S. Hart School District for coordinating all
of the schools during the painting sessions as well as providing
transportation to the unveiling for the students who participated
in the creation this mural.
