Santa Clarita Valley Golden Valley Bridge Project

In June of 2008, the City of Santa Clarita Arts & Events Office and the Santa Clarita Arts Advisory Committee began seeking an artist to create and implement artwork for the Golden Valley Bridge underpass. The bridge is on Soledad Canyon Road in the Canyon Country section of Santa Clarita. SCAF didn't initially apply for the project because we mainly focus on interior murals. But while working on the Kentwood mural, SCAF Executive Director, Marc Kolodziejczyk came up with a design idea that would create mural componenets able to weather the elements outside and yet still be capable of being transported to local schools for painting.

Using a Venetian tile design, the mural is basically a puzzle of panels constucted out of aluminum. The panels will eventually be mounted to the concrete of the underpass. Phil Lantis, the Arts and Events Administrator loved the initial concept, so we proceeded to design a rough sketch with images depicting the arts within Santa Clarita.

We submitted the concept to the Arts Advisory Committee who approved the concept and awarded SCAF with a city grant to proceed with the project.

We then contacted the Superintendants from the William S. Hart, Saugus and Sulphur Springs School Districts to see which of their schools would participate in the painting sessions. The aluminum panels have since been built by Sign Source sign company. Currently, Disney artist, Nicole Armitage has begun to paint the color design on the sketch to create our paint by numbers style guides.

On March 7, 2009, Nicole completed the color design for the triptych arches and we began to create the color style guides for the paint by number system for each panel.
While preparing the style guides, we ordered the paint we needed from Vista Paint, organized the panels and prepared for our first painting session.

Plum Canyon
Elementary School

The first painting session took place on March 15 & 16 at Plum Canyon Elementary School. 133 students participated in painting the first panels of the first arch of the triptych mural. Plum Canyon and Cedar Creek Elementary Schools represented the Saugus Union School District from the Santa Clarita Valley. Plum Canyon painted approximately 50% of the panels for the first arch. A big applause for you on all your hard work!

Elementary School
The second painting session took place on March 18 & 19 at Cedarcreek Elementary School. Approximately 84 students participated bringing the first series of panels of the first arch to approximately 95% completion. The students from Plum Canyon along with Cedarcreek had a hard task with the amount of detail on these first panels. Thank you for all your effort!

Canyon Springs
Community School
The middle arch mural panels where painted at Canyon Springs representing the Sulphur Springs School District. Approximately 57 mainstream peer tutors from the 5th and 6th grades have painted along side 24 students with special needs. This anxious bunch painted approximately 70% of the mural in the first day. This will allow us time for touch up before we store the panels and move on to our third and final arch that will be at Golden Valley high School. Congratulations to you Canyon Springs on a job well done!
